Rayka Zehtabchi draws attention to taboo on menstruation in India and wins Oscar

The documentary ‘Period’ shows that in many villages in India, menstruation is still a topic that cannot be discussed. Many women still do not have access to sanitary pads. They often call in sick during their menstruation and miss income because of it.

Zorg van de Zaak Foundation helps the Indian Tea Association (ITA) to sell sanitary pads on the plantations in the north-east of India. At this moment, the production and sales of sanitary pads are extensively experimented with.

In 2017, Zehtabchi flew to India twice to film in a village. Two students of 15 and 16 years old were raising money for a pads machine. They imagined that a documentary would seriously help draw attention to their situation. Two years later, the documentary is now getting an Oscar for ‘Best Short Documentary’.
